Cividate Camuno’s amphitheatre
is of the type with an earth-filled base, less costly than those held up
by arches, and the kind that was built where it was possible to exploit
the natural shape of the land.
It was constructed shortly
after the theatre, during the Flavian dynasty, in the 1st century AD or
(at the very latest) in the early 2nd century during Trajan’s rule.
The part towards the hillside makes use of the slope as a base for the
seating, whereas the rest is founded on stone-built substructures between
the perimeter wall and the podium which were filled with earth dug out
from the arena.
