After the Roman conquest,
the valley population was at first organized as a civitas which was administratively
dependent upon nearby Brescia. During the 1st century AD, however, the
independent res publica Camunnorum was created and the inhabitants were
granted full Roman citizenship. The administrative centre was established
on the site of the modern Cividate Camuno and experienced a period of notable
prosperity and growth, especially in the late 1st and 2nd centuries.
